READ HER NEW WRITE-UP!!! TOUCHING! UPDATE: 11/7/14 PLEASE READ THIS NEW WRITE-UP ON CALLEN! For a while now, because they love each other so much, we have been saying that Callen and Buster Brown needed to be adopted together, but we are rethinking that. If the RIGHT FAMILY comes along for either of them, and several of us at the shelter agree that the new home is a perfect fit, we will be willing to separate the two. You are reading this bio because you are probably interested in adopting a homeless dog, loving it well, and giving it the best life possible. So, as you read about Callen, remind yourself that very shy dogs need loving homes just as much as outgoing dogs do. Callen, almost 3 years old now and weighing about 40 pounds, was homeless at a very young age. Bette Grahame, President of Nelson County Humane Society/SPCA, fostered her until she was about ten months old and in September xxxx, brought her to our shelter so she could be seen and get adopted. But Callen was painfully shy and quick to do her best to hide when people seeking dogs approached her. Since she had quickly latched onto her roommate and best friend, Buster Brown, she would hide behind him when necessary. And she still does. Callen gets courage by looking to Buster for guidance. If things are okay with him, they become okay for her too. When he is belly-up getting belly rubs from me (Flower), Callen sometimes sneaks in between us & does a playful pounce upon him! She loves to play with dogs and NEEDS other dogs in her life! Often, shell now wedge herself between Buster and me so she can get some affection too. She WANTS and ENJOYS affection but she is not confident enough on her own (just yet) to go to people for it. She does accept affection from those of us she trusts though and she is quick to sit for treats before she retreats to her safety zone. Callen and Buster love to tussle, play, and give chase with each other. And then, once tired, they return to me for more affection. That Callen does this warms my heart because it is a HUGE and trusting move on her part and I am honored that she trusts me the way she does. All it took from me to get her to do this is my taking time with her and basically letting her make all of the moves as she got to know me. Now she lets me brush her, pet her (even her belly), and she loves it when I scratch the top of her head and clean her ears with a tissue. We dont know what, but something in Callens young life must have frightened her very much. That she has lived in our shelter for the past two years hasnt done much to give her the self-confidence that she needs either. What she truly needs is a consistent routine she can count on, inside a calm environment with very patient adult people, in a world that is kept rather small. Youll not find a cuter Collie mix than Callen but not everyone will make a good forever home for her. She really MUST HAVE patient, loving people who have known and loved shy dogs before. They must have a calm home (in a quiet setting) and a securely (visibly) fenced yard because Callen will NOT go to strangers if she makes an escape. Her new family MUST HAVE at least one other dog too and their dogs MUST live inside their home as valued family members. Callen wants and needs to be someones beloved homebody and play with another dog on a daily basis. She is VERY CLEAN in her room and good on a leash (walks right beside you) but will NOT potty during a leashed walk because she cant relax enough to do so.
